Leathernecks MC, International, the Jason Dunham Chapter

Four Chapters Ride as One

Four Leathernecks M/C Chapters had the pleasure to join up for a combined ride to Everglades City on the Southwest Coast of Florida on the 7th of Jan.  Participating were the Jason Dunham Chapter, Tri-County Chapter, Treasure Coast Chapter and the South West Chapter.  We were blessed with cloudless skies and temperatures in the high 70’s during the daytime hours.  Starting out at our “House”, VFW post #1966, in Fort Lauderdale we traveled across Alligator Alley to Route #29 and headed south to Everglades City.  Route #29 has 7 marked “Panther Crossings” for the endangered Florida Panther, however we were not fortunate enough to see the panthers, we did manage to see several hundred alligators out having their daytime warming siestas.  The gators ranged in size from super mongo to juveniles.  We were also entertained by all the birdlife that abounds in the everglades, egrets, ibis and hawks are plentiful as well as the ever present turkey buzzards who are usually a hazard to bikes as they sit in the traffic lane enjoying fresh roadkill and are very obstinate about giving ground to a Harley.

Everglades City is the home to the largest stonecrab fishing fleet in Fl. and we took advantage of the freshest claws you can eat anywhere at the Triad Seafood Restaurant.  Upon leaving we continued the “loop” home by taking US #41, Tamiami Trail east until we could turn back north along Krome Ave., the south eastern boundry of the everglades to US #27 and back to Lauderdale with a short dinner stop at Café #27, the local biker destination adjacent to the everglades.

The comradere and brotherhood of the Club members was the high point of the ride, just a bunch of Jarheads and their deathcheaters, our Naval Corpsmen, out for a ride where we have the knowledge and brotherhood that only Marines and FMF Corpsmen can understand.

Thanks all for a great day and reminding me of why I am so proud to be a Leatherneck!
